Examples of our work
Working with Royal Grammar School, Guildford
We refurbished the hockey pitch surround and fitted shutters and a safety barrier for the climbing wall. Also smartened up the sports hall this summer. We are now refurbishing the Estate office and Bursar’s office in Gillingham House.
Restoration Of Period Circa 1830’s House.
Client reported damp smell and evidence of mould around socket plates of recent damp-proofing/plastering works. Our investigations proved three defects.
The external rainwater soak away system was breached and woefully inadequate for the amount of rain water that was delivered at one point. This required the design and construction of a discreet soak away pit with access.
The previous electrician had drilled through the basement tanking allowing the above rainwater to reach the internal plaster. We re-tanked the walls and re-decorated.
The chimney from the basement was leaking at the pot allowing moisture penetration and mosses to grow. With no ventilation to the flue the damp smells concentrated and permeated into the basement bedroom. This was cured simply by ventilating and opening the closed flue – success!
Restoration of a Twin-Chimney Roof – Hall & Woodhouse Brewery
Surveyor duly asked us to investigated movement on two chimneys at one of the Brewery’s listed buildings. Scaffold was erected and the offending render carefully removed which exposed seriously spalled( frost/ rain damaged) period brickwork dating back to 1815. The brickwork had perished and was ‘letting go’ of the render thus becoming dangerously unsafe. DMBR undertook repairs to re-instate the chimney brick work and rendered with lime based mortars and supportive cements. The decoration was completed using a ‘breathable’ emulsion tinted paint supplied by C Brewer & Sons.
Addition of Glass , Spiral Stair-case and Mezzanine Floor – Modern Restoration
Appointed by Messrs McAndrew Martin Chartered Surveyors we set about fixing supporting steel-work and timber floors to form an additional floor at the top of a modern development in Old Portsmouth. The centre piece of the new floor was access via a solid glass cylindrical stair case that had to be fire resistant to meet current Building Regulations. We regard this work as a triumph of ‘old design meets new’ in our sympathetic interpretation of modern architecture. The results spoke for themselves – success!

“Duncan Mason has completed a number of projects on our Grade II listed Georgian House over the last year. He was recommended to us as an expert in the restoration of old buildings and he has managed to sort out some quite significant problems that other building companies had not been able to deal with. We have been very impressed by his knowledge, clear communication on costs and over all execution of the work and we are happy to highly recommend him and his team.”

“With all our heart we thank you for a most wonderful job you have accomplished with rebuilding our balcony.
Where we were very distressed, when we realized that it needed rebuilding and was on point of collapsing, you have turned what was a nightmarish moment into a wonderful opportunity and situation.
We couldn’t be more happy with the great improvement you have made. Not only in rebuilding the balcony in such a wonderful way, but by enlarging it to twice the size. We are very happy with the finished situation and the veranda downstairs too looks beautiful after the work you have done there.
Thank you for all your patience and good advice. It is such a pleasure to look forward to using the balcony this Spring and Summer. It has really become an asset to our house, making our house so much more lovely.
I thank you also for working always with good cheer, no matter what the weather, and we had it all: snow, ice, rain, storm and sunshine too at some stages. And thank you for always being patient!”

“I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for restoring my water damaged property to its former glory and I’ve written the testimonial below for you to use as you see fit. All I ask is that you do not put the number of the flat in.
I first met Duncan whilst he was carrying out works on a neighbouring property. My property had just suffered a water ingress due to a faulty bathroom tap in the property above, unfortunately every room was damaged. To say I was fairly stressed and upset would be an understatement and the builders the insurance company wished to appoint had not instilled me with confidence due to the fact that no single person would be taking ownership of the project and I’d have had a variety of un supervised sub contractors with whom I’d have to provide keys and security codes to – I was moving in to temporary accommodation so aside from the security concerns I would have had the inconvenience of “managng” the project myself.
Duncan was a breath of fresh air, he was happy to show me the works he’d carried out elsewhere and introduced me to each individual who would be involved, he assisted me with my dealings with the insurance company and was my sole point of contact. I would say that Duncan isn’t in my experience a typical builder. He establishes rapport and agrees a service level so expectations are set and managed from the very outset.Duncan will keep you informed of progress, he is solution driven and innovative. In instances of obsalescance he goes the extra mile to source comparable and suitable alternatives. Duncan and his team not only do exactly what they say they will, they do it when they’ve said they will which was a new experience for me. The standards of workmanship and finish are excellent. In addition he has the patience of a saint and did not quibble when a trade paint shade didn’t match up to the domestic shade, he had my room repainted! I am extremely grateful to Duncan and his team for carrying out an outstanding piece of work, my home looks just like new. I’d have absolutely no hestitation in recomending Duncan to any prospective customer.”

Now that the work on our undercroft is finished, I wanted to write to thank you very much for the excellent service provided by you and your team. Everyone (whether builders, carpenters, painters, tilers, electricians or plumbers) was pleasant and polite, arrived on time, did excellent work, left things clean and tidy – and enjoyed classical music!
I appreciated your understanding of the fabric of our ancient building, knowing the right methods and materials to use, managing the whole project from start to finish, and not giving up when faced with challenges.
The surveyor, who came to inspect on behalf of the insurance company, was impressed by the result, and we would not hesitate to recommend your services.
